Some leaders and elders from the Niger Delta region have asked the Federal Government to utilise the three months ceasefire extension declared by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to prove it is committed to the development of the region, Vanguard reports.
The Nation had reported that some elders and opinion leaders in the region, after various appeals and discussions with the group, had early last week, secured an extension of the existing ceasefire by three months to allow the Federal Government to demonstrate its sincerity. The Pan-Niger Delta People’s Congress (PNDPC), in particular said it had interfaced with the agitators and successfully secured a commitment from NDA to extend its ceasefire for three more months.
The stakeholders spoke at a consultative meeting in Warri with some agitators. The group, in a communique, explained that the current meeting was held to assess the security situation in the Niger Delta and what should be done to sustain the peace in the region for improved oil production. They further urged the Federal Government to set up a proper dialogue team to discuss with leaders of the region as represented by PANDEF and not the inter-ministerial committee.
