Electricity: Consumers groan over maintenance charges

power plant1Electricity consumers have cried out against an outright stripping of the assets belonging to the defunct Power Holding Company (PHCN) and imposition of illegal maintenance charges by unconstituted taskforce in some communities.

Speaking with Daily Trust yesterday, consumers in Dutse Makaranta community of Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), lamented over a continuous extortion by suspected hoodlums who had taken over the control of electricity transformers providing power from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).

An electricity consumer residing in the area who sought anonymity said, “we acquired a transformer through our self-help project; but since the PHCN privatization, some people constituted themselves as ‘taskforce’ and extort money from us supposedly to maintain the facility.”

Resident David Teku said although they pay their monthly electricity bills to the Abuja Distribution company (Disco), the ‘taskforce’ routinely collects between N500 to N1,000 from the residents, and disconnects defaulting households just as they confirmed the imposters are not PHCN staff, neither were they constituted by any legal authority.
