After four years of total blackout, the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has promised to reconnect some communities in the Southern Senatorial District of Ondo State to the national grid by December 2017, The Politico reports.
The distribution company said regardless of the contentious bills and payment issues, electricity would be restored in Ode-Aye, Okitipupa and some communities in the area. The regional head of BEDC, Mrs Kunbi Labiyi gave the assurance on Thursday in a parley with the officials of the Ondo State government, led by the special adviser to the governor on Public Utilities, Engr Light Ariyomo.
The Governor’s team also secured commitment from BEDC that Ogbagi Akoko, Irun Akoko and adjoining communities in Ondo North Senatorial District will be connected in early December 2017 and that the abandoned transmission sub station in Oke Agbe Akoko has started receiving attention. Ariyomo also said the government was in negotiations with power firms to get mini-grids established in some of the communities that may be too far away or which may not benefit from immediate reconnection exercises by BEDC.
